Introduction
The majority of consumers in the UK still buy their toilet paper from grocery stores like Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda or Lidl. These stores typically offer toilet paper from various brands, at sizes of between four and sixteen rolls per pack.
It can therefore come as a shock when consumers become more eco-conscious and begin to buy bamboo or recycled toilet paper online, only to find that most brands offer boxes of 24, 48 or even 64 toilet rolls!
For people who have large families or live in small houses or flats, storage space is often limited, and buying toilet rolls in such a large quantity can often pose a problem. Other people may have the space but simply not want to store that many toilet rolls at any one time.
In this blog, we explore the rationale of buying bamboo toilet paper in bulk and ideas on how to store it when storage space is limited. We also discuss what to do if you simply don’t have the space for it, but are determined to not return to buying tree-destroying toilet paper in plastic packaging from your local grocery store!
The benefits of buying bamboo toilet paper in bulk
- Price
This one is a no brainer. Just as normal toilet paper, or indeed any product, is cheaper when bought in bulk, bamboo toilet paper is no different.
You will therefore often find that bamboo toilet paper brands are cheaper per roll when bought in packs of 48 as opposed to packs of 12 or 24.
Given toilet paper is used all year round, and remains a necessity unless you are travelling away from your home, buying in bulk will save you money, with the additional benefit of never running out of toilet paper (nobody wants that!)
- Reduction of waste
When discussing the merits of eco-friendly products like bamboo toilet paper, price cant be the only component. Indeed many consumers are willing to pay more for products which are less damaging to the environment, including electric cars or green energy for one’s home.
Buying toilet paper in bulk doesn’t just save you money however, it also significantly reduces the level of waste associated with buying smaller packs of toilet paper more regularly.
For example, the surface area of a cardboard box large enough for four Bamboo Soft toilet rolls is around 1,600cm2. If you were to buy 48 rolls of toilet paper in regular increments of four toilet rolls, the total surface area of the carboard would be 19,200cm2.
On the other hand however, the surface area of the cardboard used for our box of 48 toilet rolls is only around 8,900cm2, less than half that of buying 12 boxes of 4 rolls individually.
Most brands offer bamboo toilet paper rolls in packaging which is plastic free and recyclable, but avoiding this waste in the first place should still be the preference.
- Time
Another no brainer. Buying bamboo toilet paper in bulk removes the stress of worrying about toilet paper running out in the household. Setting up a subscription to purchase your box of rolls regularly, and you are likely to never run out of toilet paper again!
Once you have bought your toilet paper in bulk, grocery store visits can be for product with a shorter shelf life, like fruit and veg. Plus, you don’t have to carry a huge pack of toilet rolls to the car on your way out!
Ideas on storing bamboo toilet paper when you are limited for space
- Don’t buy in bulk
Wait a second, isn’t this article designed to give ideas on how to store bamboo toiler paper when purchased in bulk?
It is indeed, however we wanted to make it clear from the outset that it is possible to buy bamboo toilet paper in small packs of four, eight or twelve rolls. Not all bamboo toilet paper brands offer their products in such small quantities, but there are definitely some that do.
As you will save time, money and waste by buying in bulk, we definitely recommend considering buying in bulk, and using the tips below, however if necessary, buying bamboo toilet paper in small quantities is better than buying normal toilet paper
- Sharing with friends
Do you happen to have friends or family who also buy bamboo toilet paper? If so, why not consider buying a box of 48 rolls, and splitting the cost and number of rolls into two lots of 24 rolls or three lots of 16 rolls, with each lot going to a different household?
By buying in bulk, you are still saving money and excess waste, however by splitting the rolls between different households you are avoiding the hassle of finding space to store them.
We appreciate this option is not available to everyone, especially if you are the only maverick in your family or group of friends who purchases eco-friendly products. Please read on below however for more useful tips!
- You don’t have to store it all in the same space
Ideally, when you buy toilet paper, you would want to store it all in the same space. Now that we are trying to buy in bulk so as to save waste and money, it may prove difficult to find the space to store 48 rolls of toiler paper in one place!
So what is the solution – store it in different places. For example:
- Most bathrooms can fit at least 6-12 rolls inside them. One on the toilet roll holder, five on the windowsill in a diamond formation and six in a line to the side of the toilet roll holder.
- Most houses have storage space under the stairs and in the upstairs hallway, which can typically fit at least twenty four rolls. If you live in an apartment or flat, storage space can usually be found in the same space as the boiler and washing machine.
- Another twelve rolls can be stored in spare drawers in the kitchen, on top of the fridge/freezer or even under the kitchen sink
In addition to this, other nifty areas in the house to consider are:
- Under the bed – this can be either in the drawers to the side of your bed, if you have them, or directly underneath the bed if it is raised slightly
- Underneath or to the side of your desk within your home office space. Following the revolution of flexible and home working, many of us have created home working spaces, often having pockets of space which can be utilised for our toilet paper storage, or other storage problems!
- Attic/loft space if you have it, ensuring that there is no damp which may ruin the toilet paper.
- Garage space if you have it, ensuring that you keep several rolls inside the house so you are not regularly venturing into the garage for refills!
- Basement space if you have it, ensuring that the cold and damp do not impact the toilet paper
- Use overhead space
Bathroom doors are normally limited to a peg for bathrobes and towels. Getting creative however, hanging baskets or containers can be pegged to the door, creating space for toilet paper rolls.
Another idea is to build shelves on your bathroom wall, which would enable the storage of an extra few toilet rolls.
Using overhead space, including the two examples mentioned above, leaves floor space untouched and available for other uses, whilst also adding a unique design and feel to your bathroom.
- Consider your car as a place for storage
These days, most families have more than one car. But even for those of us with one car, our boots are often unused, storing little other than the car’s spare tyre and maybe some bottled water for long journies.
Our car boots can therefore be used to store some or all of our toilet paper, ensuring that several rolls remain inside the house to avoid regular trips to the car for refills.
Whilst this may be impractical for families with young children, as often boot space is needed for prams, some families may benefit from this option, and save having to utilise any storage space within the house altogether!
A lawnmower, weed killer and hedge cutter. These are all things typically stored in the shed within your garden.
Your back garden shed might also be a place where you can store your toilet paper however, also saving storage space within your house entirely.
This relies on you having a back garden in the first place (I can hear groans from those with flats/apartments…), however if you have a back garden but no shed, this may be the push you need to acquire one.
As noted above, shed are not just great for storing garden equipment, but also household essentials such as cleaning equipment and toilet paper. They can also be used to store bicycles, tools which may be dangerous in a house with young children and waste before it goes off to the tip.
Summary
You may think that you don’t have the storage space for buying toilet paper in bulk, however a bit of creativity and thinking outside the box, and you probably have more space than you think.
Whether its utilising the shed in the back garden, arranging toilet rolls on your windowsill in a fancy pattern or stuffing toilet rolls under your bed, there are many different ideas to consider
And if you still think that none of these ideas are suitable, you can always buy smaller quantities of bamboo toiler paper, from the few brands that stock them.
Has this blog convinced you to try buying in bulk for the first time? If so, why not consider Bamboo Soft’s box of 48 rolls? You wont regret it!
